Vacation on the Altmühl: 7 days canoe tour like in heaven

7 Days

Your trip

You have always wanted to do it?

But you are not quite sure?

Then you are exactly right here! The Altmühl is not only THE paddling river among ‘pros’. This leisurely stream, which prides itself as the slowest in Bavaria, offers you ideal opportunities to get to know the country from a whole new perspective. For long stretches you will think: I’ve never experienced Germany like this before!

Bets?

Bet!

It’s amazing how much our perspective shapes our perception. You will see: Germany is a jungle country …

The Altmühl enchants with its very special tranquility! Very quickly you will get used to the paddling technique and begin to appreciate the boat as your very own nutshell. Haste and stress fall away in an instant as soon as your paddle dips into that river for the first time. Herons nest on the banks. Swans swim proudly by. Baroque castles, mighty fortresses, fortresses, beautiful old towns and the Bavarian Gemütlichkeit await you, as soon as you put on somewhere…

And who knows? You might make friends with a beaver. In the Altmühl Valley you will feel transported to times long past. Dive in and enjoy the heavenly peace on the water!

Oh, by the way, you can also paddle the tour with kayaks. Please indicate this as a comment when booking if you would like a kayak.

In the morning you will receive your new center of life: the canoe!

We will give you a short introduction – you paddle off. The Altmühl leads you quietly through open terrain for the first few kilometers. Soon you can make out the castle of the county of Pappenheim in the town of the same name. Perfect for a break and a walk up to the castle.

From here it is only a few more paddle strokes to your accommodation.

Pappenheim - Dollnstein :
Day 3

Canoe tour Pappenheim – Dollnstein, approx. 20 km

First thing in the morning, you’ll be back on the water, passing quaint villages and juniper heaths. On the way, a beer garden in Zimmern awaits a stop.

You continue paddling past the “12 Apostles”. After a few kilometers it gets exciting, because two cross weirs with mini rapids and “canoe slides” are waiting for you: At the Hammermühle and shortly after at the Hagenacker. The Altmühl is dammed here with small weirs and barrages. In the middle you will find one boat slide each, that is a concrete slide easily passable by boat. But don’t worry: immediately in front of both weirs you can moor up, stop for a rest and take a leisurely look from the shore. Once through – it’s really fun!

Please just drive centrally towards the culvert and maneuver confidently like a pro. If you do not dare to go over these weirs, you can also carry the canoe past.

Shortly after, you will reach the village of Dollnstein.

Soon you will have made it. Eichstätt is a lively small town with many cafes and restaurants. After the small villages of the last days, the city air brings a completely different atmosphere.

Kipfenberg - Beilngries :
Day 6

Canoe tour Kipfenberg – Beilngries, approx. 16 km

Your journey on the Altmühl seems to have been much longer than just 6 days. We have, I hope, not promised too much – the tranquility of the river captivates everyone.
