Hiking week in the Black Forest: The southern Black Forest around Titisee, Schluchsee and Feldberg

Day 1: Individual arrival at Lake Titisee

Already the arrival is an experience!

Take the train up the Höllental from Freiburg or come from the direction of Donaueschingen. The Dreisam Railway is worth the trip. Please get off at Titisee station – even if it is a little difficult. Perhaps you will have the opportunity later to continue to Schluchsee.

Continue by bus to Saig above the lake on the slope of the Hochfirst or by cab directly to your starting hotel.

Our tip: Travel relaxed one day earlier. We will gladly book an extra night for you in Saig. Please select “Extra night at departure point” when booking.

Day 2: From Titisee to Mathisleweiher – quiet paths and Black Forest idyll, approx. 19 km, 550 m ↑, 600 m ↓, ~ 5 h

The day begins with a gentle descent through tranquil forests down to the famous Titisee. Its deep blue water accompanies us on the popular lakeside path. You hike further up into the Bärental valley through the adjacent nature reserve. For those who like it, a visit to the schnapps museum or a slice of Black Forest gateau will tempt you.

Over the Behabühl and along the babbling Seebach stream, the trail now leads more steeply uphill – until you finally reach the Mathisleweiher pond: a hidden gem in the middle of the forest. The trail then descends along narrow paths to the world-famous winter sports resort of Hinterzarten with its ski jumps. Let the stage come to a relaxed end.

Day 3: From Hinterzarten to Feldberg – high-altitude trails, forest paths and tranquil lakes, approx. 18 km, 900 m ↑, 450 m ↓, ~ 6 h

Today it’s high up: on wonderful hiking trails you climb up to the Viewpoint at Windeck. The view over the Black Forest opens up wide. A short stop at the charming  Milchhisli, a small drinks station directly at the farmer’s, provides refreshment – authentic Black Forest style.

Through dense forests we reach the Ramartihof. Once again, a beautiful beer garden invites you to take a break. Afterwards, a real natural jewel awaits: the deep blue, circular  Feldsee, embedded in steep rock faces. A narrow path leads you steeply up into the  Ski area on the Feldberg – the roof of the Black Forest.

Whether via the promising plateau to the Bismarck monument or past the House of Nature – Your destination today is accommodation in Germany’s highest municipality. You spend the night near the top of the pass or in a rustic  Mountain hut directly below the summit – an unforgettable end to an impressive day’s hiking.

Day 4: Over the Feldberg ridge to Todtnauberg – summit happiness and far-reaching views, approx. 15 km, 250 m ↑, 600 m ↓, ~ 4 h

Today there is a real highlight on the program: you climb the Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest. The ascent is short, but steep – and is rewarded with a breathtaking view.  Panoramic view over the Black Forest heights to the Alps.

After a real rest at altitude, we follow the famous Westweg. It leads us over windswept mountain ranges and through quiet forests. The landscape alternates between rugged openness and shady tranquillity – an impressive interplay of the elements.

You hike gently downhill past numerous rest areas with magnificent views until you reach the lively winter sports resort of Todtnauberg – nestled in a sunny high valley and known for its Black Forest hospitality.

Day 5: From the waterfall to the high valley – nature experience between Todtnau and Bernau, approx. 15 km, 350 m ↑, 750 m ↓, ~ 5 h

This stage also begins spectacularly: you follow the impressive waterfall trail down into the valley and visit the imposing Todtnau waterfall. The water plunges almost 100 meters into the depths – a real natural spectacle.

From Todtnau, the chairlift takes you comfortably up to the Hasenhorn. Once at the top, it’s worth making a detour to the viewing tower before continuing your hike to the rustic Gisiboden Alm. Here you will encounter grazing cows and grazing cattle – pure Black Forest idyll.

Past the Bernauer Kreuz and over the Hofeck, the trail leads back down into the valley.

Across meadows and along the bubbling Albbach stream, you finally reach Bernau in the Black Forest – one of the most beautiful high valleys in the region and a perfect place to arrive and take a deep breath.

Day 6: From Bernau to Schluchsee – panoramic views, tranquil forests and glistening water, approx. 22 km, 700 m ↑, 650 m ↓, ~ 6 h

After a visit to the legendary Scheibenfelsen with its distinctive cross, you follow the panoramic Panorama trail, which gives you sweeping views over the Bernau high valley. The trail then leads down to the idyllic  Menzenschwand, past the small chapel and into the tranquil natural surroundings.

A steep path takes you up to the Schlupfhütte. You reach the highest point of the stage at Salzlacke. From here, you hike along unsurfaced forest paths through seemingly endless, secluded forests – a meditative section that makes the tranquillity of the Black Forest palpable.

In the afternoon you reach the glittering Schluchsee. Perhaps treat yourself to a short break at the  boat rental, before you cross the impressive dam wall and finally the village of the same name. Schluchsee – an atmospheric end to this varied stage.

Day 7: A finale with a view – from Schluchsee back to Saig, approx. 15 km, 450 m ↑, 450 m ↓, ~ 5 h

For the crowning finale of your hiking week, start on the shores of the Schluchsee and climb up to the striking Riesenbühl tower. From here, you can enjoy one last sweeping view over the heights and valleys that you have traversed over the past few days – a moment to pause and marvel.

The route continues along quiet forest paths into the idyllic valley of the Urseebach stream. Along the babbling waters, you reach the charming town of Lenzkirch. Treat yourself to a break in the café by the town hall.

One last uphill section – through shady forests and across flowering mountain meadows. Finally, you reach your first accommodation again high above Lake Titisee – filled with impressions, nature experiences and the special magic of the southern Black Forest.

Day 8: Departure or extension
