Hiking vacation Italy: 7 days on the road in the heart of the Dolomites

7 Days

Your trip

Experience nature in the Dolomites: idyllic mountain lakes, lush alpine meadows, green forests and the legendary Dolomites accompany you on your hike through three nature parks.

It is not for nothing that the Dolomites have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the start, the Pragser Wildsee lake greets you with its crystal-clear water reflecting the walls of the Seekofel. All those who believe that nothing can top this experience will be proven wrong as soon as their gaze wanders high above Cortina over some of the most imposing peaks in the Dolomites. The Cristallo group, the Tofane and the Fanes group vie for the viewer’s favor. Of course, a detour to the “Three Peaks” is a must.

The overall technically easy hike runs along marked mountain and hiking trails. The tour is suitable for anyone with a good basic level of fitness. Climbing skills are not necessary.

You will stay in selected inns and hotels of the 3***, partly 4**** category. We attach great importance to regional authenticity in our selection. You will experience genuine South Tyrolean hospitality.

Please pay tourist tax, if due, directly on site.

Every day the tour offers you a rich breakfast or buffet.

If you have booked half board, you can look forward to a 3-course dinner every evening – except in Cortina.

From day to day

Arrival to Alta Pusteria :
Day 1

Arrival in Dobbiaco or Villabassa

Individual arrival at the hotel of departure. You will find a free parking lot in the immediate vicinity of the hotel

On the first evening, take some time to breathe in the air of the South Tyrolean mountains in Alta Pusteria.

Bressanone - Neustift - Lake Varna :
Day 2

Hike Hochpustertal – Pragser Tal – Plätzwiese, ~ 15 km, 1,100 m ↑ & 600 m ↓, ~ 7 h

Your hiking tour begins at the idyllic Pragser Wildsee lake. This wildly romantic mountain lake enchants with its crystal-clear water against an impressive backdrop. The trail takes you across the plateau to the Rossalm and on to the Prato Piazza meadow. In addition to nature and tranquillity, you can enjoy stunning views of Monte Cristallo, the Tofana and the world-famous Three Peaks.

Are you a leisure hiker? Then you can opt for a slightly more relaxed option to get started. We will take you by transfer to the Gasthof Tuscherhof. From there you start your hike. Today you hike along the Stollabach stream past Gasthof Brückele, the Stolla hut of the same name and the “Felsenbildern” to your stage destination. Incidentally, the pictures are erosion phenomena caused by the constant action of water and the different composition of the rock.

Prato Piazza - Dürrenstein :
Day 3

Hike Prato Piazza – Dürrenstein, ~ 10 km, 800 m ↑↓, ~ 5 h

The starting point for today’s stage is the Plätzwiese high alpine pasture. Alongside the Hohe Gaisl and the Kreuzkofel group, it is one of the most popular hiking areas in the country. This is mainly thanks to its extraordinary flora and wild lakes. This region has a special appeal for visitors.

In the Fanes Sennes Braies Nature Park, the largest nature park in the Dolomites, you can choose between two options. Starting from the Prato Piazza, you can either reach the Strudelkopf (shorter variant) or the Dürrenstein (longer variant), depending on the variant. Both variants offer you a unique view of the Hohe Gaisl, the Three Peaks, the Tofana and Monte Cristallo.

Prato Piazza - Knappenfuss Valley - Gemärk - Cortina d'Ampezzo :
Day 4

Hike Prato Piazza – Knappenfuss Valley – Gemärk – Cortina d’Ampezzo, ~ 16 km, 600 m ↑ & 1,200 m ↓, ~ 7 h

You hike through the Prato Piazza and descend through the Knappenfuss valley into the Gemärk – the border between South Tyrol and the province of Belluno.

From there, you have two options: Either you take the direct route to Cortina d’Ampezzo by public transport. Or you can opt for the slightly longer variant to the Ra Stua hut and below the Col Rosa to Cortina d’Ampezzo. There are other shortcuts along the way.

Circular hike Faloria :
Day 5

Circular hike Faloria cable car, ~ 15 km, 300 m↑ & 1,200 m↓, ~ 6 h

The panorama from the starting point of the stage is simply stunning. The mighty rock giants of the Ampezzo Dolomites rise high into the sky; Monte Cristallo and the Cristallo Group, the Tofane and Fanes Group are the main protagonists of this spectacle.

Decide on one of two tours:

1) A slightly longer tour takes you towards Forcella Faloria,

2) the shorter variant via the Dolomieutrail.

Both lead you towards Passo Tre Croci, the descent to the Olympic town of Cortina follows the same route. Let yourself be enchanted by the natural beauty of the fascinating surroundings, the imposing peaks of the Dolomites.

If you don’t want to take the cable car, you can take a beautiful circular walk around Cortina.

The ticket to the cable car is included in the price of the trip.

Cortina - View of the Three Peaks :
Day 6

Hike Cortina – Rifugio Auronzo hut Three Peaks Three Peaks view, 10 km, 100 m ↑ & 1,000 m ↓, ~ 5 h

The bus takes you to the Auronzo hut, located directly beneath the world-famous “Three Peaks” rock massif. The imposing peaks, which were fiercely fought over as part of the front between Italy and Austria-Hungary during the mountain war in the First World War, are probably the most famous rock formation in the Dolomites. From here you hike leisurely down via the Rienza Valley to the Dreizinnenblick and take the bus back to the starting hotel of your hiking tour in Dobbiaco / Villabassa. For the more leisurely, there is the option of walking around the famous Three Peaks and taking the bus back from Rifugio Auronzo to Dobbiaco / Villabassa. The ticket for this option is not included in the travel price. You can buy tickets directly on the bus.
