Hiking tour Rheinsteig: in 8 days from Rüdesheim to Koblenz

8 Days

Your trip

The Rheinsteig – a dream?

Verily! And that too on two legs.

This hike is a must for every hiker’s heart: climb the Loreley once in a lifetime. From the Germania over the Bingen Mäuseturm climb the rugged cliffs and steep vineyards of the Middle Rhine along the slopes of the Taunus and Westerwald.

I bet the Rhine will knock you over!

Where else is the land so old, so saturated with myths and stories as on this ‘River of the Germans’: A trade artery since Celtic-Roman times, fiercely fought over and fortified with all its customs stations, defensive walls, border castles, symbols of power. Place of longing, European romance, carnival, lightness of life German French lifestyle.

Mountain ranges with fabulous views, vineyards as far as the eye can see, countless castles and palaces, enchanting half-timbered houses: you will discover all this and so much more during your hiking week between Mainz and Koblenz.

The Rheingau with its idyllic vineyards and the many Straußenwirtschaften invites you to taste the wonderful Riesling. In the UNESCO World Heritage region of Middle Rhinegau, you will stroll along the hilltop castles in the footsteps of Rhine Romanticism.

Incredible scenic beauty and culture – it is not for nothing that the Rheinsteig was voted the most beautiful hiking trail in Germany. Simply – hiking at the highest level, in the truest sense of the word!

Please note: This variant of the tour starts from Rüdesheim. Parts 2 and 3 from Mainz to Rüdesheim shown on the map are included in tour variant 192a and are omitted here.

Accommodation

regionally typical middle-class hotels and inns in the cuddly old towns along the Rhine.
Please note that the narrowness of the valley, the two most important railroad lines in Europe, the waterway on the river and the federal highways running on both sides of the Rhine have transformed the Rhine valley from its natural tranquility into a bustling and tightly intertwined one. Please understand the ‘noise of life’ in the narrow streets along the river.

Catering

Daily rich breakfast buffet or large sportsman breakfast.

The route

For the most part, you will hike along vineyard and secluded trails, always accompanied by magnificent views. The ascents/descents on the mountain ranges of the Middle Rhine Valley are easily manageable with a good basic level of fitness. They will learn to feel their legs. Partly the path is exposed, surefootedness required. You can shorten most of the stages on your own by bus, train or boat.

Please note: This trip is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility.

Hiking with dog

On this walking tour you are welcome to take your four-legged friend with you. Please let us know the breed and size of your dog when booking. Any additional costs are payable on site.

You can easily travel from Koblenz to Rüdesheim on the Rheingau line in the direction of Wiesbaden / Frankfurt with a direct train connection every hour. The return journey by train on the right side of the Rhine is a real experience! You will be on the road for about 1 1/2 to 2 h. Find and book connections and tickets e.g. at www.bahn.de.

Day by day

Journey to Rüdesheim :
Day 1

Journey to Rüdesheim

Have you ever been to the wine alleys of Rüdesheim?

Welcome to the capital of Riesling!

We can promise you one thing: you will not be the first to be captivated by this stream as it breaks through into the Taunus and Hunsrück mountains. The Romans were already trudging around here, securing ‘their’ forts on the fertile alluvial land with the Limes deep in the woods above the vineyards.

You start your tour in the middle of Riesling-Land, on the right bank of the river, which the hard rock of the Taunus forces to a rabid reversal of direction to the west – since 1883 under the sometimes more sometimes less watchful eyes of Germania on her Niederwald monument.

Rüdesheim - Lorch :
Day 2

Hike Rüdesheim – Lorch, approx. 21 km, 650 m ↑↓, ~ 7 h

Today you finally climb the ridges of the western slopes of the Taunus to the Middle Rhine Valley. Enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful panorama and the view of the mouth of the Nahe River in Bingen, located opposite on the left side of the Rhine. The path is sometimes steep, rocky and lives up to its name. However, it is always well secured and accessible.

Passing the hunting lodge Niederwald you walk to Assmanshausen, known for its excellent red wines and the beautiful half-timbered houses. In your overnight stay in Lorch you can also expect a lot of half-timbered houses and excellent wine.

Lorch - Kaub :
Day 3

Hike Lorch – Kaub, approx. 20 km, 400 m ↑↓, ~ 7 h

On varied trails and along the ridges with fantastic panoramas over the Rhine Valley, your path leads to the historic shipping town of Kaub (or alternatively on the ridges to Dörscheid).

The ruins of Nollig Castle, Gutenfels Castle and, as a highlight, the imposing customs castle Pfalzgrafenstein, located directly on an island in the Rhine, make today’s stage a real Middle Rhine experience.

By the way, today’s stage ends in Kaub at the place where Marshal Blücher led the united armies against Napoleon across the Rhine in 1814 with 50,000 men and 15,000 horses.

Breakfast
Kaub - St. Goarshausen :
Day 4

Hike Kaub – St. Goarshausen, approx. 20 km, 640 m ↑↓, ~ 7 h

The heart of the Middle Rhine Valley awaits you today – with winding paths, fantastic views and legendary castles.

The most famous rock on the Rhine, the Loreley is also on your program, as well as the three-castle view of Burg Katz, Maus and the largest of all Rhine castles, the fortress castle Rheinfels.

A crowning conclusion to your day’s stage before you reach St. Goarshausen.

Breakfast
St. Goarshausen - Kamp-Bornhofen :
Day 5

Hike St. Goarshausen – Kamp-Bornhofen, ~ 23 km, ~ 760 m ↑↓, ~ 8 h

Through natural paths, fantastic landscapes and past defiant castles, today’s route takes you over the Filsener Lay, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the region.

Castle Liebenstein and Sterrenberg, the “hostile brothers” accompany you on your way to the winegrowing community Kamp-Bornhofen.

Breakfast
Kamp-Bornhofen - Braubach :
Day 6

Hike Kamp-Bornhofen – Braubach, ~ 17 km, ~ 530 m ↑↓, ~ 6 h

On your way to Braubach you will encounter Liebeneck Castle and the impressive Marksburg Castle. It boasts of being the only undestroyed hilltop castle on the Rhine.

You should definitely take time to visit the beautiful castle in its medieval garb.

The wine town of Braubach welcomes you with its city wall and numerous half-timbered buildings.

Breakfast
Braubach - Koblenz :
Day 7

Hike Braubach – Koblenz, ~ 18 km, ~ 550 m ↑↓, ~ 7 h

On the last stage, numerous highlights await you once again: Castles, nature reserves, wooded areas and the flowery Bienhorn Valley.

The hike offers distant views, beautiful nature, as well as an adventurous passage through the Ruppertsklamm, a real highlight!

You will cross the Rhine on the impressive Pfaffendorfer Bridge before ending your hiking week at the “Deutsches Eck” in Koblenz.

High above the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, face to face with “his” Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the gigantic equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I has once again towered above the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers since 1993. You have reached the “Wacht am Rhein”.

Koblenz :
Day 8

Koblenz – return journey or extension

You have reached the ancient capital of the Rhenish Republic, the Romans, Chur-Trier, the Prussians, the Germans. Koblenz is probably the most underrated city in Germany. The banks of the Rhine and Moselle, the three fortresses, the fortress garden, the promenades, the beautiful old town. Koblenz is worth an extra day.

Stay or go and come back again. Maybe a Moselle-Rhine tour next year?
