With its ice-capped three-thousand-meter peaks and bizarre rock formations, with its frozen lakes and beautiful larch forests, the Engadin is rightly considered one of the most beautiful high valleys in Switzerland.
On this tour you will experience the cross-country skiing paradise Engadin from Maloja to Zernez. The course of the trails leads you over frozen lakes along the famous Engadine ski marathon, through lonely forests or also into the high and side valleys. On the way, wonderful sun terraces invite you to stop and there is enough time to experience the magnificent panorama of the Engadine mountains. This beautiful country has about 320 sunny days a year.
The tour is suitable both in the classic technique and for skaters. In each case you will stay two nights in the same hotel before your luggage is transported to the next accommodation. Equipped only with a small daypack, you walk the routes at your own pace. We will provide you with detailed information, maps and a local contact at .
Requirements and route
Basically, the entire route from Maloja to Zernez is well doable for less experienced as well as for sporty cross-country skiers. Only on day 6 a longer, rapid descent awaits you before your destination Zernez.
The daily stages can be extended at will or shortened by public bus. We have designed the tour for people with average fitness for a sporting activity at an altitude of 1800 meters. The routes are ideal for cross-country skiers in classic style: the two high valleys Val Fex and Val Rosegg are tracked only in classic style. Skaters can switch to other tracks at these points. Please ask directly on site. The routes can also be combined in classic technique and skating style.
Please note: This trip is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
Would you like to practice a little more first?
We have two other tours on offer that you can use well to prepare. Our routes in the Black Forest and South Tyrol each start at a Nordic Center, where we can book introductory and technique courses for you before you set out on the tour and trails. Please feel free to take a look at our tours
We recommend that you arrive by train. Get in on the vacation at home. Enjoy the ride – and look forward to the Swiss punctuality of the Rhaetian Railways. Ski equipment is available for rent on site and can be pre-ordered here.

Ski tour from Maloja to Fex Valley and back, approx. 22 km
Today the classic cross-country skiers visit one of the loneliest high valleys in the Engadine.
Over slightly copied terrain, the route goes from Maloja via Isola up into the Fex Valley. Isola is known as a small peninsula, which in summer can be reached only by boat or on foot. In winter Isola is inhabited by about six families, a small restaurant with a wonderful sun terrace is widely famous for its polenta. The Fex Valley is car-free and accessible only for classic cross-country skiers.
The skaters run across the lake to Sils and back over the Isola peninsula. The routes can be shortened or lengthened depending on your fitness level.
Return to the Hotel Pöstli in the afternoon. Possibility to visit the Giovanni Segantini studio, dinner at the hotel.
Today we are going to the original course of the Engadine Ski Marathon. You cross the frozen Lake Maloja via Sils to Surlej. Wide trails and long gliding make the time fly by.
In Surlej you will pass the landmark of the Upper Engadine – the 17th century castle situated on the lake and recognizable from afar. Lunch break in Surlej, because here half of the route is already done. After lunch we continue along the old ski jump through the Stazerwald down to Pontresina.
The Hotel Station in Pontresina is located directly on the cross-country ski trail, your luggage is already ready for you. Dinner at the Bahnhöfli restaurant right next to the hotel.
Please note that the double rooms have joined beds with two separate mattresses.
Pontresina - Roseg Glacier, approx. 16 km :
Day 4 - Wednesday
Ski tour from Pontresina to Roseg – Gleschter, approx. 16 km
The Roseg Valley is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Upper Engadine – not least because of its spectacular view of the Roseg Glacier at the end of the valley, which here seems close enough to touch. Slightly ascending, the classic trail runs through sparse forests. Again and again the glacier world and the mountains up to almost 4000 meters high appear in the direction of travel, the Bernina, the only four-thousand-meter peak in the Swiss Eastern Alps, towers over the valley.
The Roseg mountain restaurant offers not only an impressive view but also a fantastic dessert buffet where you can replenish the lost calories. After the lunch break, we return to the valley to Pontresina on another, slightly sloping trail. Possibilities for a tour of the village or a visit to the show dairy. The skaters glide over the race track into Val Roseg, but do not reach the end of the valley on this track. Instead, the skaters continue to Val Morteratsch – a high valley that is at least as impressive as the one at the foot of Morteratsch.
Today we continue towards the Lower Engadine – along the Inn River, which rises in Maloja. From Pontresina the trail leads flat past Samedan and Bever. Here the valley becomes wider, mostly a light tail wind pushes you forward, the famous Maloja breeze. In La Punt, a small Engadine village, the skis are unbuckled for a few meters. You walk past the typical Engadine houses with their thick walls until you can strap on your skis again after 500 meters. After a midday rest in La Punt, the route continues over the golf course in a slightly undulating manner to Zuoz. Check-in at the hotel, dinner at the hotel restaurant or at the cross-country center of Zuoz, depending on availability.
Ski tour from Zuoz to Zernez and back by train to Zuoz, approx. 25 km
Today we continue towards the Lower Engadine and with it the last stage of this Engadine crossing.
From Zuoz the trail leads along the right side of the valley through dense pine forests. While the Inn flows far below on the left side, the trail leads along uphill. Three ascents and descents have to be mastered until the wide valley around Zernez opens up. In a rapid descent it goes down to Zernez. Restaurants invite you to linger. The Rhaetian Railway will take you back to Zuoz where you will spend the last evening of the Engadine crossing with a tasty dinner of Engadine specialties.
Dinner at the hotel restaurant or at the cross-country ski center of Zuoz, depending on availability.
