Cycling tour Germany: Short vacation on the Moselle Cycle Route 2023 / 24

Day 1: Arrival to Trier

Individual arrival to Trier. Your rental bicycle is ready for you at the hotel (if booked). Output of the tour information. Unguarded parking payable on site.

If you arrive early, we recommend a boat trip on the Moselle . A trip of about 1 hour is included in the price. You can still take the tour on day 2.

The oldest city in Germany attracts visitors with numerous historical sights. You should not miss the famous Porta Nigra, Roman excavations of all places, the Emperor’s Herem, Constantine’s Basilica or the amphitheater and the magnificent St. Peter’s Cathedral . A stroll through the lively old town is perfect to get in the mood for the hiking week ahead.

Bike tour Trier – Trittenheim, ~ 45 km, 250 m↑↓, ~ 4 h

Today the cycle path leads you via Schweich with its historic Fährturm and Longuich to Trittenheim. In Longuich the Roman castle Villa Urbana invites guests.

The picturesque village of Trittenheim is located directly on one of the numerous Moselle bends. It is lined with vineyards. An informative wine trail leads south of the village past the Laurentius Chapel.

A wine tasting in the evening is the Moselaner guest’s duty – and included in the price.

Bike tour Trittenheim – Traben-Trarbach, ~ 55 km, 300 m↑↓, ~ 5 h

Today, the numerous Moselle loops dominate the landscape.

Through picturesque vineyards you will reach Bernkastel-Kues. Already visible from the bike path is Landshut Castle. You will pass directly by the castle on the right side of the Moselle, the south bank. Due to the steep ascent, however, a detour is only recommended on foot. They go about 45 minutes.

Treat also the beautiful half-timbered houses of Kues for a while. Worth seeing is the market square lined with half-timbered houses. Wine lovers are invited to the Moselle Wine Museum incl. Vinotheque. Before continuing on to Traben-Trarbach with its ruins of Grevenburg Castle and the mighty slate city wall, it is worth mentioning a settlement from the Neolithic Age in the town of Kues. You move on historical ground at every turn.

Bike tour Traben-Trarbach – Cochem, ~ 55 km, 300 m↑↓, ~ 5 h

Through one of the largest wine-growing areas on the Moselle near Zell, the trail leads via Bullay past the Stuben monastery ruins.

You will find the abbey on the right, the southern side of the Moselle. For a short sightseeing you change the Moselle side over the bridge before Bremm. A bike path leads you directly to the ruin. The way back is the same again over the Moselle bridge.

Bremm is located at the foot of the steepest vineyard in Europe, the Calmont. It has an almost vertical slope of 65 – 76% gradient.

After further Mosel loops you will reach Beilstein. High above the village towers the imposing ruins of Metternich Castle. Continue on to today’s stage destination in Cochem. There you still have the opportunity to visit the Reichsburg. Admission is included and still possible the next day.

Bike tour Cochem – Koblenz, approx. 55 km, 20 m↑↓, ~ 5 h

Past Klotten with the ruins of Coraidelstein Castle and Treis-Karden with its collegiate church and museum, the route continues to Moselkern.

In a short detour on foot or by bike into the Eltz valley you have the opportunity to visit the impressively beautiful Eltz Castle – the one on the 50 – Mark – bill anno dazumal.

Passing the castle Bischofstein and Hatzenport with its Fährturm as well as the castle Thurant you drive to the wine-growing villages Kobern-Gondorf and Güls. High above the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, face to face with “his” Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the gigantic equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I has once again towered above the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers since 1993. You have reached the “Wacht am Rhein”.

Koblenz

You have reached the ancient capital of the Rhenish Republic, the Romans, Chur-Trier, the Prussians, the Germans. Koblenz is probably the most underrated city in Germany. The banks of the Rhine and Moselle, the three fortresses, the fortress garden, the promenades, the beautiful old town. Koblenz is worth an extra day.
