Lake Constance cycling vacation: 8 days to the Rhine Falls and around the lake from Constance to Constance

8 Days

Your trip

Lake Constance by bike ?

Of course – from Constance to Constance in 8 days – and we had also been to the Rhine Falls!

We start this technically and physically simply beautiful lake tour in the old council and university town of Constance. You first circle the Untersee to Stein am Rhein. Here we leave the lake and cycle for a day through Switzerland to the largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls in the middle of Schaffhausen. You come to Radolfzell, Lake Überlingen, Unteruhldingen and Meersburg. You cycle along the Obersee via Friedrichshafen to Lindau and Bregenz in Austria. The route then continues along the southern shore of Switzerland via Romanshorn and Kreuzlingen (CH) back to Constance.

You spend eight days and seven nights at the lake, one in Switzerland on the High Rhine. But the tour begins and ends in this city, which boasts more than just a “paradise” district. Somewhere here it must have been, once.

Six full days belong to the saddle. You may plan the day of arrival and departure, if at all possible, so that you still find a little time for the lake and its uniquely beautiful city on the outflow of the Rhine. Small tip: The lido Hörnle – at the horn of Constance Staad. Simply fantastic – and completely free of charge – even after the cycle tour with a one-day extension!

On this tour you have the choice between three different categories. We book for you according to your wishes
> in the“Standard” category, good 3-star inns and mid-range hotels or
> in the“Comfort” category, good to very good inns and comfort hotels at 3- and 4-star level or – if you are looking for something special –
> in the“Premium” category, comfortable, very good hotels at 4-star level.

An extensive cyclist’s breakfast is included on all our cycle tours in all hotels.

The route

In six full cycling days, you will cycle a total of around 280 km and around 1000 meters in altitude, mainly on the Lake Constance cycle path on its own route and not on the main roads. Almost all daily stages can also be shortened by boat or train – at your own expense. The routes are designed so that you can enjoy the lake from all sides on your bike and still have enough time to enjoy all the tourist and culinary attractions around it.

The trip is not suitable for persons with reduced mobility. Please contact us for detailed information if needed.

Travel documents

Before the start of your trip, we will send you a link by e-mail where you will find the digital travel documents such as your hotel list, voucher, route map, travel information and GPS data to help you prepare for your bike tour.

You will also receive a printed package of documents at the start hotel. Among other things, it contains all the map material.

Maps and navigation

You can find the entire tour as a collection at komoot . If you want to use the maps for navigation, please install – if not already done – the komoot app on your mobile device a few days BEFORE your trip. To do so, please register at Then download the tours from this collection to your device. Please contact us with any questions in advance of your trip.

Especially on the first day, you should allow some time before the tour starts to exchange your vouchers / value coupons for the ships for tickets.

We provide you with a Komoot app tour package for this trip. Please book this as an additional service once per trip and receive it in return:

Individual arrival in Constance (D) :
Day 1

Individual arrival in Constance (D)

Hot tip: Whenever possible – travel by train – to one of the most beautiful train stations in Germany right at Rhine kilometer zero between the old town and the harbor.

Constance is worth the trip for the train ride alone. If you are coming from the northwest – then take the Black Forest Railway. If the Black Forest is already a dream with all its viaducts and tunnels, the first sight of Lake Constance after Singen near Radolfzell makes every railwayman’s heart beat faster.

Enjoy your first evening by the lake, the beautiful harbor flair between the train station and the world-famous Konzilsgebäude. Stroll through the old town with its winding alleyways and proud cathedral. Pay your respects to the Rhine at Rhine kilometer 0 under the Konstanz city bridge. Do you have a little more time? Try a sip of lake water at Strandbad Horn, probably the most beautiful natural bathing area on Lake Constance. Cheers!

Constance - Stein am Rhein :
Day 2

Cycle tour Constance – Stein am Rhein – Öhningen, approx. 40 km ~ 300 vertical meters ↑↓

Your cycle tour begins at Rhine kilometer zero – on the city bridge over the Rhine at its outflow from Lake Constance.

You follow the Rhine on its southern side, i.e. the side of Constance’s old town, or cycle through the venerable center of the council and episcopal city with its winding alleyways, colorful paintings and southern harbor flair past the cathedral to the west.

Follow the cycle path in the direction of Gottlieben, Swiss borders, Stein am Rhein. From Ermatigen (CH) at the latest, you follow the banks of the Untersee and Rhine. The path is somewhat hilly and offers you wonderful views of the lake and the Hegau.

Finally, you reach the enchantingly beautiful old town of Stein am Rhein (CH).

Hop off, cross the Styrian Rhine bridge on foot, stroll along the lake and treat yourself to a moment of peace and quiet in the toilet garden on the banks.

After a tour of the beautiful old town, the monastery and castle on the Rhine, turn your back on the sun as it slants westwards and head back east towards Constance and Radolfzell on the opposite bank of the Stienernen Altstadt.

The Lake Constance cycle path takes you to your second accommodation in Öhningen, Wangen.

Congratulations! You have explored the Untersee & Rheinsee.

Stein am Rhein - Rhine Falls Schaffhausen - Stein am Rhein :
Day 3

Cycle tour Stein am Rhein – Rhine Falls Schaffhausen – Stein am Rhein, approx. 60 km ~ 500 vertical meters ↑↓

Immerse yourself in the magic of the Munot town of Schaffhausen today. A unique city with medieval facades, magnificent 171 bay windows and winding alleyways. The Rhine Cycle Path then takes you to the next highlight. Don’t miss out on the impressive natural spectacle of the Rhine Falls. At 23 meters high and 150 meters wide, it is one of the largest waterfalls in Europe.

Stein am Rhein - Lake Überlingen :
Day 4

Cycle tour Stein am Rhein – Radolfzell – Bodman – Überlingen – Unteruhldingen, approx. 70 km ~ 450 vertical meters ↑↓

Radolfzell Minster and the Mettnau peninsula, one of the largest nature reserves on Lake Constance, are the highlights of this third day.

Via Bodman-Ludwigshafen and Überlingen you reach the Birnau monastery church. In Unteruhldingen, we recommend a visit to the pile dwellings from the Stone and Bronze Ages.

Überlingen - Friedrichshafen :
Day 5

Cycle tour Unteruhldingen – Meersburg – Friedrichshafen, 25 km ~ 150 vertical meters ↑↓

Meersburg, the town of museums, invites you back to the Middle Ages with its romantic corners.

The sea route takes you to the Zeppelin city of Friedrichshafen, where you should definitely pay a visit to the Zeppelin Museum.

Friedrichshafen - Bregenz :
Day 6

Cycle tour Friedrichshafen – Lindau – Bregenz – Höchst, 45 km ~ 60 vertical meters ↑↓

Today you reach the Lake Constance metropolis of Lindau, the border triangle between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Visit the old town and the lighthouses with the Löwenmole, the landmark of the city island of Lindau.

You then reach the cultural stronghold of Bregenz. Stroll through the old town or take the cable car up to the 1064 m high Pfänder and enjoy the unique view of Lake Constance. Through the nature reserve of the Rhine delta, the largest freshwater delta in Europe, you reach Höchst.

Bregenz - Constance :
Day 7

Cycle tour Höchst – Bregenz – Höchst – Romanshorn – Constance, 55 km ~ 150 vertical meters ↑↓

You cycle through the Rhine delta into Switzerland. In terms of landscape, the canton of Thurgau offers a wealth of variety with its small villages and huge orchards.

A fantastic view of Lake Constance and the impressive foothills of the Alps accompany you all the way to Constance. You can shorten the route by 21 km by taking the train from Romanshorn to Constance.

Farewell to consistency or extension :

What do I do in bad weather?

Well, then: Actually, you are traveling in the warmest region of Germany with the most hours of sunshine – and for the most part, the weather is better than it first appears from your hotel room in the morning. But when it’s actually freezing and frosty and windy and pouring down? Have a nice day in the destinations of your ship tours, buy a train ticket and go back to Constance a little frustrated but warm and dry. The entire lake is well connected by train, bus and boat. A special tip for particularly gloomy days are the Bodenseetherme in Konstanz. At Hörnle in the district of Staad, within walking distance from the old town along the lake path in the direction of the Meersburg car ferry, you can enjoy the gray, wet and cold lake like in hardly any other place. Stop by

Where can I charge my battery when I am on the road with the e-bike?

To be honest – we don’t really have a good answer to that. In your hotel, it is prohibited to charge the batteries unattended in the hotel room for fire safety reasons. In exceptional cases, you can ask the reception to charge your battery. Ask along the way at restaurants you visit. Many houses are set up for this.

Please note: You can vary the tour suggestions as you wish. Just follow the excellent signage of the Lake Constance Cycle Path.
