Bike trip from Italy to Croatia: 3 countries in one week

8 Days

Your trip

Three countries in one week: this trip invites you to a spectacular experience of Mediterranean port cities along beautiful coasts of the Adriatic Sea – through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.

You cycle between the sea and the southern foothills of the Julian Alps, from the famous city of Venice through the Friulan plain with its medieval towns. Finally, you will approach the proud port city of Trieste. Up to here, your path is mostly flat. You continue to follow the coast of Istria south, now through slightly hilly terrain. A real pearl!

The return from Porec to Venice is possible by boat or by bus.

You will stay in selected, regionally typical hotels of the 3*** – or 4**** – category along the route. The rooms have shower and toilet. We offer single or double rooms as:

> One double room with one double bed each.

> 2-bed room with two separate beds each.

Note: On this tour, rich in popular excursion sites and seaside resorts, we cooperate with several hotels. This may affect the length of the stage on some days, as well as change the stage finish. In any case, the route description will give you detailed information about all the routes. If a route is shorter one day, then the next one is correspondingly longer the day after. In total you cycle the same route.

The route

The first 3 days are mostly flat through the Venetian and Friulian plains. The last 3 stages are a bit hillier. You will cycle about 300 – 350 km in 6 stages.

Most of the route is on paved roads, with just under 10% on dirt roads. You’ll be riding uphill for just under 1,400 meters of elevation gain over the entire route.

There are no direct train connections between the overnight destinations. You can, however, select the stages on the 4. and 5. day shorten by train or boat.

Unfortunately, the trip is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Please note: For organizational reasons, due to weather conditions or according to regulations of local authorities, some changes in the tour itinerary could occur before or during the vacation. Along the route, for example, you might find detours due to construction work that we cannot foresee. Please follow the instructions on site.

Day by day

Individual arrival to Mestre (Venice) :
Day 1

Individual arrival to Mestre (Venice)

Individual arrival to Mestre (Venice mainland). The city of Venice will enchant you with its world-famous beauty.

Mestre - Jesolo, about 50 - 60 km :
Day 2

Bike tour Mestre – Venice – Jesolo along the sea coast, approx. 50 – 60 km

After a few – but extremely spectacular – kilometers by bike, first the ferry and then the vaporetto (regular boat in Venice) will take you through the lagoon city at St. Mark’s Square. You will receive detailed information about this with the travel documents. On the endless bathing beaches at the Litorale di Cavallino – a headland in the northwest of the lagoon – numerous fishing boats and souvenir stands line your path. Before leaving Venice through the “back entrance”, there is still the possibility to make a detour to the lighthouse at the far end of the island.

You will then reach Punta Sabbioni, the southern limit of the Adriatic coast north of Venice. From here you will continue along the fantastic sea coast.

I bet you won’t be able to resist the temptation of the sea until the evening. Why should you? Take a little time for refreshment in the water.

You will spend the night in one of the places along the famous coast.

Breakfast, Dinner
Jesolo - Portogruaro, about 40 - 60 km :
Day 3

Jesolo – Caorle – Portogruaro, approx. 40 – 60 km

Our route first takes us back to the sea via Cortellazo and follows the coast along idyllic fishing ports to the old town of Caorle and the Campanile Romanico. Then we leave the coast again and cycle through a typical lagoon landscape rich in waters and small huts towards the Julian Alps on the horizon to the old Venetian trading town of Portogruaro.

In the heyday of the Venetian Republic, Portogruaro was an important river port of the “Serenissima”. Even today, friends of the town claim that Portogruaro is probably the inland town that has preserved the most Venetian flair. True enough. Take a little time for the many magnificent buildings and stone witnesses of the city.

Breakfast, Dinner
Portogruaro - Aquileia, about 60 - 70 km :
Day 4

Portogruaro – Palmanova / Aquileia, about 60 – 70 km

It will not surprise you: you will learn history on this tour. Today we cycle back in time from the Serenissima, the proud epoch of republican Venetian Renaissance to antiquity. But first cross the plains on the eastern border between Veneto and Friuli. You will pass through an area rich in water and history along rivers, canals and ancient Roman cities. So there is also a lot to discover away from the beaches: Roman ruined cities, ancient churches and lonely landscapes at the edge of the lagoon.

From Marano Lagunare a boat will take you – on request and at your own expense – to just before Aquileia. This golden name once belonged to a great cosmopolitan city of the Roman Empire. You can visit excavations of the Roman city in two open-air museums. The ferry ride is included in the package price for this tour option.

As an alternative to the boat, you will cycle via Porto Nogaro, Cervignano del Friuli in the direction of Grado to Aquileia. The total cycling distance without train and boat is about 70 km.

By the way: you will hardly want to ;-), but today you can shorten the distance by 20 km not only by boat but also additionally by train: buy a ticket and take the train from Portogruaro to Latisana.

Breakfast, Dinner
Aquileia - Trieste, about 50 - 70 km :
Day 5

Palmanova / Aquileia – Trieste, about 50 – 70 km

On our bike trip today we cross the river Isonzo and through the hinterland of Trieste we come to a barren rocky landscape dotted with caves.

Further it goes now finally again in the direction of the sea. We reach a coastal landscape of unique beauty. Where the karstic plateau dips into the deep blue water, where the white cliffs rise vertically above the sea towards the sky, we follow the coastal road. The Gulf of Trieste is waiting for you – and invites you to rest:

Duino with its two castles, Sistiana with its characteristic bay and Miramare with the famous white castle built at the request of Maximilian of Habsburg. For the wildly romantic castle overlooking the bay of Grignano you should take some time. Visit its magnificent parks with more than 2000 species of plants.

Recovered, you will reach Trieste with its old port from the Habsburg Empire and all its sights.

Oh, and once again, this day also offers you the possibility to shorten the stage by 30 km. To do this, buy a ticket and take a train from Monfalcone to Trieste.

Breakfast, Dinner
Bike tour Trieste - Piran, about 45 km :
Day 6

Bike tour Trieste – Piran / Portorož, approx. 50 km

After a few kilometers you cross the border with Slovenia. In Slovenia you cycle mainly on cycle paths through famous seaside resorts like Koper (Capodistria) and Izola (Isola d’Istria) to Piran (Pirano) or Portorož (Portorose). The slightly longer – and scenically highly recommended – variant of this stage leads through the “Val Rosandra” valley in the hinterland.

At the end you will reach Portorož, a famous bathing and spa resort on the Slovenian Riviera.

Breakfast, Dinner
Bike tour Piran - Porec, about 55 km :
Day 7

Bike tour Piran / Portorož – Poreč, approx. 60 km

The last big cycling stage leads us today along the coast always south to Croatia – past the “salt gardens” of Sečovlje. Here on huge areas extracted by natural evaporation sea salt. Cheers! Secovlje is also the largest wetland in Slovenia and a famous place among ornithologists.

After a few kilometers you will cross the Croatian border and cycle down to Istria, the largest peninsula of the Adriatic Sea. Through slightly hilly terrain you will drive to Poreč, the most important coastal town on the west coast of Istria. Take some time for the impressive Euphrasius Basilica, since 1997 UNESCO – World Heritage Site.

Congratulations on the arrival!

Helmet obligation?

Helmet compulsory! The three countries handle this differently. In Italy, helmets – which are strictly controlled – are compulsory for children and young people. In Croatia, helmets are compulsory for everyone. Slovenia provides it for children. We recommend throughout the tour: wear a comfortable, airy bike helmet and please put on edge gloves.

Bicycles can be rented or you can bring your own. If you cycle your own bikes, please book the option “Transport own bike” for the return transfer.

Ferries and ships

This tour includes two boat trips; the first and the last day both to Venice. In between, you sometimes have the opportunity to shorten bike kilometers by boat. Please refer to your travel documents for details and departure times. The return transfer on the last day, if you want to use it, please be sure to book in advance with the travel booking. The boat ride on day 4 is included in the package price for this tour option. Any additional boat tours in between can be purchased locally as a supplement if needed. Bicycles are always taken along, provided that there are free capacities.

Please note: Depending on the accommodations we book for you, the overnight stops may differ from those indicated in the route plan. Please refer to your individual hotel list for accommodation locations! Also, in many places you have freedom to shorten the path or make it different. The proposal presented here is therefore more for inspiration and orientation than for compulsive imitation. If you like - download the komoot app on your phone, search for this trip and let the app be your navigator and inspirer.
