Do you know the slowest river in Bavaria?
It is not entirely fair to reproach the Altmühl for its Bavarian Gemütlichkeit. Over long stretches, it has traveled in the former valley of the Danube in large footprints – and has just settled in its gentle floodplains at the foot of steep rocky slopes.
Since 1980, Germany’s oldest long-distance cycle path has accompanied this quaint valley with its half-timbered towns, medieval-looking fortified buildings and baroque palaces for around 250 km. It has long since gone from being an insider tip to one of Europe’s most popular cycling routes. As the country and municipalities continually invest in the path and the colorful faces of its hospitality, the bike path lives up to its predicate year after year.
Excellently signposted, well maintained, largely car-free or traffic-calmed, it has become a respected part of the overall Altmühltal ensemble.

The trail offers tranquility, gentle touring, beautiful views and lush green floodplains. It takes you to the heart of Bavarian hospitality and a unique cultural landscape.
Visit the Hohenzollern residence of Ansbach with its impressive orangery.
Be impressed by the cathedral in Eichstätt, resting place and pilgrimage site of St. Willibald, and take in the cloister.
Visit the Twelve Apostles near Solnhofen – or the wooden bridge near Essing pictured at the beginning.
And finally – arrive at its majesty, the Danube and the world heritage city of Regensburg.
